The juvenile justice system seeks to rehabilitate children, rather than punish them for their juvenile criminal behavior. Since the late s, critics of the juvenile courts have sought to abolish this system, arguing that it has failed in its rehabilitation efforts and in not punishing serious criminal behavior by young people. At the same time, defenders of the juvenile justice system contend that for the vast majority of children, the system is a worthwhile means of addressing problems.
